Retain Inline Citations After AI Draft Response Is Applied
Preserve inline source citations after multi-source AI Draft responses are applied to a project
Current Behavior
When AI Draft generates a response using multiple sources, the user generating the draft can see inline citations indicating which source supports specific portions of the generated response.
However, once that AI-generated response is applied to the project, those inline citations are no longer available. Users can see which source records contributed to the response, but cannot determine which specific statements or portions of the response came from each source.
This is particularly limiting for downstream reviewers/SMEs who did not generate the original AI Draft.
Requested Enhancement
Retain access to inline source citations throughout the project workflow after an AI Draft response has been applied.
Reviewers should be able to:
- See which source supports each portion of a multi-source AI response.
- Access the underlying source directly from the citation.
- Continue viewing source attribution as the response moves from drafting into SME review.
- Ideally, preserve the citation/source relationship even if the response is subsequently edited, with appropriate indication that the response has been modified.
Example
AI Draft generates one response using two approved Content Library records:
Source A:
Investment Accounting
Source B:
Fund Accounting
The generated answer contains information from both sources. While generating the draft, the Proposal Manager can see which statements came from Source A versus Source B.
Once the answer is applied to the project, an SME may only be able to see that both sources were used—not which source supports which part of the answer.
Desired experience: The Investment Accounting SME should be able to immediately identify and validate the statements sourced from Investment Accounting, while the Fund Accounting SME can validate the portions sourced from Fund Accounting.
Business Impact
For State Street Corp, multi-source responses can require validation by different SMEs. Preserving inline citations would provide reviewers with clear source-level traceability, reduce the effort required to validate AI-generated responses, and strengthen confidence and governance around AI-assisted proposal responses.
